Getting Started

JEditor lives inside the Unity Editor. Acquire it from the Asset Store, import it once, then keep JSON work next to the project that depends on it.

1. Get JEditor from the Unity Asset Store

JEditor is distributed through the Unity Asset Store.

Get JEditor on the Unity Asset Store

  1. Open the JEditor Asset Store page.
  2. Add the package to your Unity account.
  3. In Unity, open Window → Package Manager, switch to My Assets, and import JEditor into the project.

After import, JEditor is available from the Unity menu.

2. Open JEditor

In Unity:

Tools → DivinityCodes → JEditor

The JEditor window opens with the Documents workspace selected. You can switch workspaces later from the left feature rail or the JEditor menu.

3. First five minutes

  1. Create or open a document In Documents, click + on the tab bar, or use File → New Document. Use File → Open… or the toolbar Import JSON action to load a .json file. Untitled tabs are named Untitled-1, Untitled-2, and so on until you save.
  2. Paste a realistic sample Try a small game payload:
    {
      "playerId": "p_1042",
      "displayName": "Aria",
      "level": 12,
      "currency": {
        "gold": 2400,
        "gems": 35
      },
      "inventory": [
        { "id": "sword_iron", "qty": 1, "rarity": "common" },
        { "id": "potion_hp", "qty": 4, "rarity": "common" }
      ],
      "flags": {
        "tutorialComplete": true,
        "seasonPass": false
      }
    }

  3. Format and inspect Use the Documents toolbar: - Format JSON for a clean pretty-print - Smart Format when you want readable nesting without exploding every tiny array - Compact JSON when you need a dense payload Open the right dock Tree tab and expand inventory. Select a node and watch the editor reveal the matching source when Auto Reveal Tree ↔ Editor is enabled in Preferences.
  4. Search for a value Press Cmd+F / Ctrl+F (default) to open the right dock Search tab. Type potion and step through results with Enter or the previous / next controls.
  5. Glance at Live C# and Health - Live C# shows a generated class preview for valid JSON. Copy it when it looks right. - Health scores the document and lists findings you can click to reveal.

Learn the chrome quickly

Area What it is for
Left feature rail Switch Documents, Compare, HTTP, Schema; open About, Documentation, Preferences, Roadmap
Top menu bar File / Edit / View / Help actions for the active workspace
Center editor Primary JSON editing surface for the current document or workspace pane
Right dock Tree, Inspector, Live C#, Health, Search, Version Control
Bottom dock Errors and Output

Collapse the right dock to a vertical rail when you want more editor width. Drag the split handles to resize docks.

Save early

Use File → Save or the toolbar Save action.

  • Untitled documents prompt for a path via Save As…
  • Dirty tabs show a dirty indicator
  • Pin important tabs so they stay put while you close others

JEditor also brings open tabs and unsaved text back after you restart Unity.

Session memory is not source control

Workspace restore is Editor-local. It is not a substitute for saving important files into your project or version control.

A short path into each major feature

Goal Do this
Diff two balance dumps Open Compare, load left / right sources, click Compare
Validate content against a contract Open Schema, create from a document, choose Validate Against, click Validate
Pull a live payload Open HTTP, set method and URL, Send, then Open in Documents
Recover a mistake Open Version Control, Preview an older version, Restore if needed

Details for each path live in the feature chapters and in Workflows.
