FAQ & Troubleshooting

Common questions about what JEditor is, where session data lives, and how to unblock everyday workflows.

FAQ

Is JEditor a runtime JSON library?

No. JEditor is an Editor-time workspace for authoring, inspecting, comparing, and validating JSON. Runtime parsing in player builds still uses your project's chosen libraries.

Where do I get JEditor?

From the Unity Asset Store. Import it through Package Manager → My Assets, then open Tools → DivinityCodes → JEditor.

Does Version Control replace Git?

No. Version Control is a local JEditor timeline for document edits inside the tool. Use Git or your team VCS for durable project history and collaboration.

Where is my session data stored?

In the Unity project, outside Assets. Tabs, layout, output, and local history stay on your machine.

Why can't I find a floating Find bar in the editor?

Find is integrated into the right dock Search tab. Cmd+F / Ctrl+F (default) focuses it.

Why is Live C# empty?

The preview needs valid JSON. Check Errors, fix the syntax, and the class appears again.

Why did Compare refuse to run?

Manual Compare expects valid JSON on both sides. Check each pane's Valid / Errors state, then click Compare again.

Which JSON Schema draft is supported?

Schema generation and validation are oriented around JSON Schema Draft 4.

Can HTTP call any URL?

Requests need a full http or https URL. Unity may block some headers.

Do fold states survive restart?

Document text, caret, pins, and related workspace state restore. Fold collapse state is not part of the restored workspace snapshot.

What happens during a required update?

A force-update lock can block Preferences, Roadmap, feature switching, and main interaction until you update. Soft updates can be dismissed according to the overlay options.

Troubleshooting

The Tree looks stale while I type

If the document is temporarily invalid, Tree may keep the last valid model. Check Errors, repair syntax, and the tree will refresh with the new document.

Search finds nothing I expect

  • Confirm you are on the correct document tab
  • Try a shorter literal in Search
  • For structured conditions, use Query → Form or C# LINQ
  • Raise max results in Preferences if you are hitting the cap

LINQ query fails

  • Ensure JSON is valid
  • Start from objects, arrays, values, or nodes
  • Open the ? help overlay for examples
  • End with an expression that yields nodes or values. Empty results explain what to try next.

Schema validation says SCHEMA INVALID

The schema document itself has problems. Fix the schema in the Schema editor / nav tree before trusting target validation results.

Open in Documents can create or focus a linked response document. If you closed it, send again or reopen from HTTP when a linked document still exists for that response flow.

Preferences or Roadmap will not open

Check for an update overlay / required update lock. Complete or resolve the update state, then retry.

Icons or layout look unexpected after an update

Close and reopen Tools → DivinityCodes → JEditor. The layout comes back, and you can resize the docks again.
